Imagine Brussels

Solarpunk NFT contest to re-imagine the streets of Brussels.

Call to artists and artist schools in Brussels to make sketches, drawings, videos, animations to re-imagine the streets of Brussels and sell them as NFTs.

Why do we do this?

As Rob Hopkins postulates in his latest book “What If”, beyond the ecological crisis, we have a crisis of imagination. We are incapable of imagining our cities without cars, our economy without waste, our lives without plastics, etc.

We believe that artists can help us by showing us images of the future, they can help us imagine. What if?

What is Solarpunk?

“Solarpunk is a genre and art movement that envisions how the future might look if humanity succeeded in solving major contemporary challenges with an emphasis on sustainability, climate change and pollution.” – wikipedia

Why NFTs?

NFTs (“non-fungible tokens”) are digital certificates of authenticity. They enable artists to sell their art pieces on the Internet on the open NFT market (a $10B market and growing).

By using NFTs, any citizen will be able to participate in a decentralized way by buying (and potentially reselling) the art pieces that they love. Or they can join the union of crypto citizens of Brussels ( that will collectively buy the winning pieces.

Why should you participate?

  • It will give you a lot of visibility, your art will be part of an exhibition
  • It’s a great way to build up your portfolio
  • You will learn about how you can monetize your art using NFTs
  • You may make €100-€1500 (in cryptocurrencies)
  • You are contributing to the public good

How does it work?

You create an art piece to reimagine a street of Brussels of your choice. It can be a painting, a drawing, a sketch, a 3D model, an animation, a video, … It can be digital or on paper (in which case you will have to submit a digital photo of it).

If you don’t live in Brussels, here are some pictures / videos of various streets and places for inspiration.

You create a NFT on using the Polygon chain and tag it #imaginebrussels. It should be a 1/1 (only one edition). If you don't understand a word of the previous sentence, fear not! You can come to one of the Crypto Wednesdays, every first Wednesday of the month at the Citizen Corner at 7pm, or you can join one of our office hours (contact us). We can even come to your class room and do a cool presentation (in English, French or Dutch).

You submit your art piece by February 27th 2022 along with the URL on of your NFT.

Anyone can at any time make an offer to buy your NFT. You can choose to accept those offers or not. If you do, you transfer the ownership of the art piece (and the new owner is the person that will receive the prize if any).

On April 16th 2022, the jury will announce the winning art pieces and the DAO.Brussels will offer to buy the corresponding NFTs from their owners (which may or may not be the original artists if she/he has decided to sell it to someone else before).

The owner of the NFT will have 7 days to accept the offer.

Art pieces will be featured in an exhibition at the Citizen Corner that will start at the beginning of Spring 2022 (Sunday March 20th).

Need some inspiration?

The art pieces will be bought by DAO.Brussels for the following amounts:

1st prize

2nd prize

3rd prize

(total €4850)

Selected art pieces will be part of an exhibition at the Citizen Corner from March 20th till April 16th 2022.

Funding - aka where is the money coming from?

This is a citizen initiative. No subsidy involved. Only citizens putting their time and money together to play their part to reinvent the city they love.

We invite (crypto) citizens of Brussels to join to fund together this contest and collectively own the NFTs that will come out of this contest. Starting December 1, we will run a Gitcoin grant so that your donations will be matched with a quadratic funding round.

Starting in March 2022, we will also invite fellow citizens to directly buy some of the NFTs that they love and support in that way a new generation of artists in our city.

The crazy experiment part

Because we made a public commitment to buy the winning art pieces for the amounts listed above, and because anyone can buy the NFTs on the open market before the end of the contest, we effectively create a space where people can speculate on the success of the different art pieces.

This will create a positive speculative game where anyone can buy a piece of art and make a profit if the piece they bought ends up winning. Through this process, every piece of art will get a chance to be bought and every citizen can help fund artists they like.

We call this “retroactive public good funding” and it’s very much an experiment and a work in progress, but an exciting new way to use speculative games to fund public goods.

WARNING: This is very much an experiment, so we strongly advise to only buy the NFTs of the art pieces that you love without any expectation that you will be able to resell them (that advice is also valid for any NFT out there fwiw).

November: announcement of the contest

Sunday 27th of February midnight: deadline to submit art pieces

March 1-31: art pieces up for vote (and for sale) on Open Sea

March 20th: opening of exhibition at the Citizen Corner

April 16th: end of the exhibition and announcement of the winners

The Imagine Brussels NFT Contest is open to anyone.

The art piece needs to be about a street of Brussels that can be recognized (and localized).

You can submit up to 3 different art pieces. Each art piece must have its own NFT (don’t know how to do that, worry not, we are here to help you).

File types supported: JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, MP4, WEBM, MP3, WAV, OGG, GLB, GLTF. Max size: 100 MB.

The certificate of authenticity, or NFT, that you create represents the ownership of your art piece. The NFT has to be a 1/1 (there must be only one edition and you can’t create another NFT representing the same art piece on any other platform). You can set any royalty fee between 0 and 10% (we recommend 5%).

You are the sole owner of the NFT until you accept to sell it to someone.

Whenever someone buys your NFT from the previous owner, you receive the royalty fee that you set when you created (minted) the NFT.

Your art piece is open source. Anyone can use it with proper attribution.

Since we require you to post your NFT on Open Sea, you must of course agree to their terms of service.

Did we forget something? Join us and contribute.

Confirmed so far:

It’s a joint project between different collectives of citizens of Brussels that bring different expertise:
